Phone Communication

As Bluetooth Control is executing on the PC a connection to the mobile phone is required. For this connection the following possibilities currently exist to provide the communication between phone and PC/laptop:

  • A serial cable, apart from the cable 'datacommunication' capability in the phone and free serial port on PC/latop (COM-port) are required
  • An infra red connection, requires infra-red capability on phone and PC/laptop
  • Bluetooth, preferred option ;-) requires Bluetooth in phone and somehow also on the PC/laptop. Different variants for the PC/laptop are currently possible: build-in (some of the newer laptops or PC-motherboards), PCMCIA card or USB-plug.

The serial interface of the PC/laptop always appears as COM-port, both infra-red and Bluetooth also have the possibility to appear as 'COM-port' inside your PC/laptop. The hardware ports are normally COM1 and COM2, the infra-red and Bluetooth created COM-ports are in the COM3 to COMxx range.

All connection types are treated similar for Bluetooth Control, in its Edit menu via Phone connection.. entry, the preferred connection method can be selected. This is either a COM-port or (when supported by the operation system (Windows XP)) a remote Bluetooth device.

[Port Select]

The communication is started through selecting the Open entry in the File menu.

Start communication
[ComStart]

Then the application sends a couple of AT commands, when no response is received in about 30 seconds. The communication is closed again with warning information. If the communication is ok, a pop-window appears on the phone for a few seconds indicating the BTcontrol tool is activated and the menu inserted. Additionally a number of phone settings are read, as the tool might modify certain settings during its operation, these are restored when the communication is closed.

[PhonePopUp]
Temporary phone pop-up

After the disappearing of the pop-up message on the phone a 'BT control' entry becomes available under the 'Accessories' entry in the Extra's or Connect menu of the phone.

For a T68 it looks as below:
